After graduation from St. Joan, I headed to De La Salle High School. My sophomore year I transferred to Grosse Pointe South High School where I completed my remaining three years.
From what I recall of De La Salle, almost nothing involves education. My academics took a nose dive as my time was devoted to after-school football practice and after-football marching band practice.
The transfer to G.P.S. was the opportunity for a fresh start. Grades got better and I dropped my involvement in band. Though I continued playing football all the way through, my love for the sport faded as the 'political' dynamics became increasingly important at the varsity level. The newly acquired freetime was given to a rekindled passion for music.
I visited MSU and found a larger campus than what I had wanted. The only college application I submitted was to Central Michigan University. Upon acceptance, I recall having aspirations in broadcasting and cinematic arts.
My freshmen year is a file with a large red-stamp 'TROUBLE'. A whole new dimension of freedom brought forth my penchant for adventure seeking. My roommate turned out to be a De La Salle graduate (though we both went in 'blind') and shared this affinity. We eventually found that our fun nights and our classes had something in common - we consistently had forgotten about both in the morning. My rebellious behavior and plans for BCA tapered out over sophomore year. Instead, I decided to pursue a major Pyschology.
It was a good choice and I did well in the classes. The material held my interest, despite many incompetent teachers. Luckily, some of the most intelligent and passionate professors were interspersed throughout the bunch.
I thought Neuroscience would go well with a psychology degree and surely it will for some other people. I rediscovered an aversion to chemistry and working in a laboratory.
I had picked neuroscience primarily for factors other than my own passion. When I rejected it, I chose the predecessor on opposing methodology. The resulting selection...(drum roll please)...philosophy. To date this has been the best decision of my life. |
